Biography of Art
Tiger Joe Michiels, Biography of Art, 2010
In the beginning prior to my birth, in mid-year 1949, my father Bob would
rub my mother Mary's tummy and ask, "How is the little Tiger doing?"
Mom & Dad decided Tiger fit me just fine and from that day forward kicked up
a storm.
I was born in the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital on Sunset Boulevard in
Hollywood, California, on January 19, 1950, and named Joseph Norman Michiels.
I never knew who that guy was.
On my first day at Gardner Street Elementary School they called out for
Joseph Michiels and I thought there was someone else in my class with my
last name.
My first home was the back room of the Coach & Horses Liquor Store and Bar
"God Love Ya", at 7615 & 7617 Sunset Boulevard. In 1952 we moved to 2389
Nichols Canyon Road, one mile up in the Hollywood Hills from Hollywood
Boulevard.
For the past 60 years I have continued to visit and enjoy members of my
family in our Hollywood home. Multi colored paintings come from the cultural diversity of this
ever-changing canvas and film of Hollywood.
I am also very fortunate to have lived, worked, and continue to visit these
ranches in the American West:
In the 1950s, the Seven Troughs Ranch, near Apache Creek, New Mexico.
My home away from home in the 1950s, the Coarsegold Ranch & Cabin over
Coarsegold Creek, Coarsegold, California.
Also in the 1950s, McCrea's M Cross Ranch in Island Park, Idaho.
In the 1960s, Coyote Creek Ranch near Winnemucca, Nevada.
And in the 1970s, Bonnyview Ranch, Redding, California.
From here develops the intense color of wide-open space, seasonal change,
and down right ruggedness of applied paint to canvas and eye to camera.
I started drawing stick figures some time in the early 1950s. I have in my
possession a few of these rare comic or storyboard type drawings. Later in
grade school I used to draw monsters on T-shirts for a nickel, dime, or
quarter.
In the early and late1960s I painted several items that were given away. I
have no confirmation if any continue to exist.
In the 1970s I painted several oil and acrylic paintings and started an
intense collection of photographs.
The 1980s photography took front stage.
1990s I started painting again and continue to do so. My photography
continues in both 35mm and digital.
Please enjoy an experience of our colorful life in my paintings and
photographs.
